… is my drag name. Seriously, I do like to write while listening to ambient noise, and there is research suggesting ambient noise cranks up creativity.
For example, this study, which appeared in the University of Chicago Press, says so. But here’s the thing: 50 decibels or less isn’t enough to boost creativity. 85 decibels or more actually can reduce your creativity. But, as Goldilocks would say, 70 decibels is just right.
Watch this short New York Times video on ambient sound and creativity here. One ambient noise website they cite is Coffitivity. You can be on lockdown in your apartment and still listen to the inspirational sounds of people talking and cups tinkling while you type or scrawl.
My favorite ambient noise site is ambient-mixer.com. You can easily mix and download your own ambient noise. I’m particularly enjoying the “summer sounds” mixes right now.
