I read somewhere that women in arts and media who express gratitude are buying into some sort of gendered norm that’s holding us back. But for me, there is no room to claim I have accomplished everything I have all by myself. Certainly not in theatre.
So Thanksgiving is not a particularly special day for me. It has complicated and grotesque origins, which makes it problematic. Also, I try to be grateful every day, so Thanksgiving is just one in a string of days I’m very grateful.
I owe so much to my sweetheart, Central Works, Playwrights Center of San Francisco, New Conservatory Theatre Center, and the countless other folks who have helped me along the way. Let me never be too busy or self-indulgent to forget to say “Thanks.”
