I love deadlines. Deadlines spur me me to do my work. They urge me on to the finish. I deeply enjoy procrastinating, too, but having a deadline helps me make sure that I get the work done. My tendency is to be an Obliger, and I need an external accountability mechanism. More about the Four Tendencies here.
You don’t need to be so strict, though. In fact, if you are by temperament a Rebel, you’ll resist a deadline.
Setting a Soft Deadline can work well. “By the end of the year,” is a good one. And to help me get there, I use writing groups and writing prompts.
One of my favorite writing prompts sites is Writers’ Warm-up with Jesse Stong via Playwrights’ Workshop Montreal. During the pandemic, Jesse offered a 15-minute live-streamed workshop 2x every week, bless him. They are all still available on YouTube! Here’s the link.
